The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) is an industry organization tasked with disseminating information that can lead to the development of better lubricating greases for the consumer and to provide better grease lubrication engineering service to the industry. The NLGI established a specification for wheel bearing grease, CG-LB, in 1968 and it has since become the standard. The NLGI decided to update the specification and make it more relevant to manufacturing. These new specs will be official January 2021.
The new specification will be an upgrade to CG-LB, have more severe requirements for several categories and new tests to address industrial applications. This new specification will be the High Performance Multiuse (HMP) and serve as the core for a number of additional specifications that focus on specific working environments. These include:
- Water Resistance
- Corrosion Resistance
- High Load
- Low Temperature
